What does Religious Education at Frogwell offer our children?

We aim to use an enquiry-based model as a basis for our Religious Education learning. Children’s critical thinking skills can be developed, their motivation to learn increased, and their knowledge and understanding of, and empathy with people and their beliefs, religious or otherwise, will be enhanced. Our approach takes very seriously the philosophy that children are free to make their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief. RE does not try to persuade but rather to inform and develop the skills with which evaluation can take place.

The intention is that Religious Education at Frogwell School will:

• Develop children’s knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and world views.
• Promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
• Enable the children of Frogwell School to explain how beliefs and practices can inform and change the way people see the world and the way they live and treat others.
• Equip pupils to be sensitive to others’ beliefs, able to express their own views well, show curiosity and have the skills to ask appropriate questions when meeting people different to themselves.
• Develop a sense of belonging, understanding, respect and celebration.

What are the main aims of our Religious Education curriculum?

Frogwell Primary School teaches Religious Education to all pupils in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Wiltshire SACRE agreed syllabus i.e. that reflects the religious traditions in Great Britain. This is, in the main, Christian, whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions.

We aim to nurture our children’s sense of belonging by providing them with frequent opportunities to reflect on their beliefs and values through whole school assemblies and in class reflections. The children also have daily opportunities for collective worship/spiritual development, which when possible, are led by visitors from the religious community.

How is the teaching of Religious Education organised?

Discovery R.E. scheme is used as the basis for what is taught across all year groups. This is adapted to suit the needs of our pupils and is supplemented by further engaging resources to bring the children’s learning alive.  An enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning is adopted. Christianity is taught in every year group, with Christmas and Easter being developed each year in a progressive way.  Key Stage 1 covers the religions of Judaism, Key Stage 2 covers the religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam. 

The children cover 6 units a year based around a key question linked to the religion being studied e.g. Does God want Christians to look after the world?
